"Architecture is increasingly understood as a field of practice that is inextricably embedded in ecologies and energy systems, and yet embodied energy - the various forms of energy required to extract raw matter, to produce and transport building materials, and to assemble a given building - remains largely under-explored in its ramifications for both design and environment. As operational energy has declined as a proportion of buildings' total energy consumption, embodied energy has become an essential site for further speculation and innovation. Embodied Energy and Design: Making Architecture between Metrics and Narratives asks questions about the varying scales, methods of analysis, and opportunities through which we might reconsider the making of architecture in the context of global flows of energy and resources"--

City and country—these terms are generally regarded as opposites. The urban, with its constructed spaces and places, is separated from nature, with its mature landscapes and clearings. Yet, today’s landscape architecture explores both of them as a single system, making it possible to see the mutual dependency of these supposedly opposing developments. In view of massive changes in ecological systems, as well as increasing migration and the spread of unplanned human settlements, landscape architecture is also being confronted with global challenges. This catalogue is a plea to redefine the discipline’s position. Innovative but complex approaches are presented in examples of specific projects from all over the world. Landscape architecture today commits itself to the spatial systems that will shape tomorrow’s society.

Architecture is energy. Lines drawn on paper to represent architectural intentions also imply decades and sometimes centuries of associated energy and material flows. Form Follows Energy is about the relationship between energy and the form of our built environment. It examines the optimisation of energy flows in building and urban design and the implications for form and configuration. It speaks to both architectural and engineering audiences and offers for the first time a truly interdisciplinary overview on the subject, explaining the complex relationships between energy and architecture in an easy to follow manner and using simple diagrams to show how energy design strategies can be used to maximize the energy performance of our built environment, while at the same time leading to new aesthetic qualities and radically new forms in architecture and urban design. Case studies are used to illustrate the theory. The books philosophy is based on the guiding principles underlying nearly 30 years work in practice, research and teaching. It is relatively easy to make something simple seem complicated. To make a complex topic seem simple and easily understandable is far more of a challenge and this is the aim of this book.

Good Buildings on a Small Planet' portrays eight Danish architectural firms that are creating new architecture where sustainability is not simply a question of consuming less, but also about giving more. More beauty. More meaning. More community. What is a good building on a small planet? How can we create a rich, humanist architecture that is built on a profound respect for local as well as global resources? 'Good Buildings on a Small Planet' presents eight different answers that are framed by thoughts, ideas and new architecture. The introductory essay written by author Rasmus Rune Nielsen discusses the contribution of architecture to a sustainable development and lays out a humanist approach to sustainable architecture. The architects portrayed are Lendager Group, GXN, C.F. Møller Architects, Vandkunsten, EFFEKT, Henning Larsen Architects, SLA and Tredje Natur (Third Nature).

Living on a damaged planet challenges who we are and where we live. This timely anthology puts forward a bold proposal: entangled histories, situated narratives, and thick descriptions offer urgent "arts of living." These essays posit critical and creative tools for survival in a more-than-human Anthropocene. The essays are organized around two key themes that also serve as the publication's two openings: Ghosts, or landscaped haunted by the violences of modernity; and Monsters, or interspecies and intraspecies sociality.

Ecological refurbishment to Passivhaus standard requires know-how and experience. For this reason, the book has been produced as a design tool which systematically covers existing solutions. Examples relating to building physics, construction and ecology issues are presented in the same successful manner as in the Passivhaus Building Component Catalog also published by IBO/IBN (Institute for Building Biology and Ecology) using standard cross-sections and connection details in four-color scale drawings, as well as numerous tables. They have been organized by type and period of building and can easily be used to derive individual solutions. The book is a must-have reference manual for designers and building owners who want to refurbish properties to a sustainable standard.

Gathering together the world's leading experts on vernacular architecture, this once-in-ageneration publication examines how local buildings have stood the test of time and offer vital lessons for the future. The core of the book is arranged by climate zone, from desert to tropical, temperate to arctic. Within each section, buildings are presented regionally, showing how local climatic conditions and vegetation affect the evolution of building styles. This central part is bookended by a range of essays exploring the economic and anthropological aspects, while the reference section offers information on materials science and engineering, including how buildings have been adapted to contend with natural disasters. With the growing challenge of climate change, there has never been a more important time to understand how to make the best use of local natural resources and create buildings that do not rely on stripping our planet or transporting materials across the globe. This book shows us how.
